Opera Upper West is an immersive opera theatre located in Manhattan’s Upper West Side exploring authentic drama rooted in the human experience. Opera Upper West curates experiences into which audiences can enter and explore a timely topic through the lens of opera theatre. Opera Upper West intimately interacts with the Upper West Side community through exploratory classes, socially inspired performances, and strong relationships with local businesses.

Aboard the Baylander, a Vietnam war aircraft carrier docked on the Hudson River, GLORY DENIED is the story of Colonel Floyd James Thompson, America’s longest serving Prisoner of War. This production of GLORY DENIED explored the culture shock of the 60’s and 70’s and how media and memory forge American identity. Featured in NY Opera Fest 2017.

A tragicomedy about how your cellphone, like a second suitor, witnesses the most intimate parts of your life. Audiences enter a cellular themed party, only to find themselves as a fly on the wall in the living rooms of young couples imprisoned by their technology. Opera Upper West encourages artists through an authentic process of musical story-telling that is connected to the human experience. All of our teachers have received masters degrees in musical performance, and each teacher provides a system for success that inspires daily action and musical growth. Our community of artists are also encouraged to engage and learn from each other through masterclasses and social hours hosted by Opera Upper West. Learn more about our programs below:
Private or group lessons for all age levels, beginning to advanced, focus on strengthening the natural resonance of the voice. Lessons include a practice notebook, sheet music, a binder of vocal exercises, and a recording of the lesson. Teachers discuss the goals of each student and create a roadmap to success. Repertoire is chosen that speaks to your experience and expresses a truth to who you are. Techniques fostered include breathing fundamentals, range expansion, increased resonance, personal style, and authentic performance. You will also be invited to participate in Opera Upper West's masterclasses and community events!
Private lessons for all age levels, beginning to advanced, focus on strengthening technique and developing repertoire. Lessons include a practice notebook, sheet music, a binder of etudes and performance pieces, and a recording of the lesson. Techniques fostered include fundamental technique, development of scales, sight-reading, ear training, music theory, personal style, and authentic performance. Teachers and students set goals and create a practice calendar. You will also be invited to participate in Opera Upper West's masterclasses and community events!
Group classes for singing-actors to explore the actor's objective and free the impulse in performance. Classes meet monthly and consist of group warm-ups, movement, and personal sharing of work. Join a supportive network of artists while pushing the boundaries of your work.
